Semi-Monthly Pay, Explained

Semi-monthly pay means you’re paid twice a month — 24 paychecks a year, usually on the 1st and 15th (or the 15th and last day). Here’s how it works and how it compares to bi-weekly.

What “Semi-Monthly” Means

Semi-monthly = twice per month, on two fixed dates. The most common pairs are the 1st and 15th or the 15th and last day of the month. Because there are 12 months, that’s 24 paychecks a year. Each gross check is your annual salary ÷ 24 — for $60,000 a year, that’s $2,500.00 per check.

Semi-Monthly vs. Bi-Weekly

These two are easy to mix up but they’re different:

 Semi-monthlyBi-weekly
FrequencyTwice a month (fixed dates)Every 14 days
Paychecks/year2426 (sometimes 27)
Each check on $60,000/yr$2,500.00$2,307.69
PaydaySame dates each monthSame weekday, drifts through month
Three-paycheck monthsNeverTwice a year

Semi-monthly checks are larger (fewer of them), but bi-weekly gives you two extra checks a year and those handy three-paycheck months. The annual total is the same either way.

Pros and Cons of Semi-Monthly

Pros: predictable dates that line up with rent and monthly bills; simpler monthly budgeting; larger individual checks. Cons: paydays can fall on a weekend/holiday (paid the business day before); hourly overtime is trickier to reconcile because pay periods don’t align with 7-day workweeks.

How Much Is Each Semi-Monthly Paycheck?

Divide your annual salary by 24. But remember the headline number is gross — taxes and deductions come out of every check. On $60,000 a year, a single filer in a no-tax state nets roughly $2,099.58 per semi-monthly check; use the calculator for your exact figure.
