Pay Schedules

How Many Paychecks Are in a Year?

It depends on your pay frequency: 52 weekly, 26 bi-weekly, 24 semi-monthly, or 12 monthly. Here’s the full 2026 breakdown — and why the count matters for budgeting.

Paychecks per Year by Pay Frequency

Pay frequencyHow oftenPaychecks/yrEach check on $75,000/yr
WeeklyEvery week52$1,442.31
Bi-weeklyEvery 2 weeks26 (sometimes 27)$2,884.62
Semi-monthlyTwice a month24$3,125.00
MonthlyOnce a month12$6,250.00

Your annual salary is the same no matter the schedule — more frequent paychecks are simply smaller. The example column shows the gross amount of each check for someone earning $75,000 a year.

Bi-Weekly: Why It’s Usually 26 (But Sometimes 27)

Bi-weekly means a paycheck every 14 days. Since 52 weeks ÷ 2 = 26, you normally get 26 paychecks. But 26 × 14 = 364 days — one day short of a year. Those extra days accumulate, so roughly every 11 years a calendar year lands 27 bi-weekly paydays. Whether 2026 gives you 26 or 27 depends on the day of your first payday. Salaried workers on a 27-check year see slightly smaller individual checks (annual pay ÷ 27).

Semi-Monthly vs. Bi-Weekly: Not the Same Thing

These get confused constantly. Semi-monthly pays on fixed dates (like the 1st and 15th) — always 24 checks a year. Bi-weekly pays every 14 days — 26 checks, on a weekday that drifts through the month. Semi-monthly checks are larger (salary ÷ 24) but you get two fewer per year. Full comparison →

The “Three-Paycheck Months”

If you’re paid bi-weekly, two months each year contain three paydays instead of the usual two — a welcome budgeting bonus. Which two months depends on when your first 2026 payday falls. See your 2026 three-paycheck months →
